Few activities are as special, simple and cheap as watching a sunset. The Mallorcan geography offers a good assortment of picturesque and charming places to watch, each afternoon, an unforgettable sundowner. An activity, also, highly recommended to enjoy it in good company: one of the best plans for couples in the Balearic Islands. Please find below a guide to discover the best sunsets in Mallorca.
There are a couple of sites that are surely competing for the title to the best – or at least the most famous – sunset on the island:
The first one is Na Foradada, one of the most visited “observatories” of sunsets in Mallorca, as well as one of the most loved ones by the Mallorcan people themselves. It is located in the heart of the mountains, between Cala Deià and Caló de s’Estaca. At the edge of the cliff we find the spectacular viewpoint of Son Marroig, also called El Galliner. From there you can get down -in a simple 45-minute hike – to the tip of Sa Foradada. In both places there are beach bars where you can have a drink – and even listen to chill out music – while watching the sundowner.
The second one is Cabo Formentor, where we also find one of the prettiest lighthouses in Mallorca. It is a magical place located 20 km from Pollensa, from where you can also contemplate the Sierra de Tramuntana and on clear days, you will even see the profile of Menorca. Very close to the lighthouse is the viewpoint of Sa Creueta, with beautiful views of Isla Colomer.
But there are many other places where to enjoy the best sunsets in Mallorca. In the southern area of ??the Sierra de Tramuntana, halfway between Banyalbufar and Estellencs, is the Torre de Ses Ánimes or Torre des Verger. It is a watchtower built at the end of the 16th century from where you can contemplate the sunset over the sea and the mountains. Another essential sunset tower is Torre Picada, built in the seventeenth century to stop the pirates, from which a beautiful view of Sóller and the coast of S’Illeta.
Another classic of the island – especially appreciated by locals – is Ses Covetes, located on the paradisiacal beach of Es Trenc. To enjoy the sunset even more, there is a chiringuito (beach bar) at the entrance, s’Embat, with live music and shows. Also very close to Es Trenc is Salobrar de Campos, an exceptional and quiet landscape declared a “Natural Area of ??Special Interest”. You cannot miss the sunset from the spectacular vertical walls of the busy beach of Sa Calobra, at the mouth of the Torrent de Pareis.
Two sunsets between mountains which are also highly recommended, in the south of Mallorca, are the one Cala Blava -the beach of the municipality of Llucmajor, near Palma- and the one of Mont de Randa, one of the highest points in the south of the island, from where you can see the sunset from different perspectives, almost all of them being spectacular. For the more experienced hikers, it is highly recommended to watch the sunset at the Ses Puntes viewpoint, very close to Valldemossa, where you will arrive after a one-hour walk. The road to the Cap Blanc lighthouse is also long, but the reward is worth it: incredible views from a cliff.
There are a few more places from which you can see the most beautiful sunsets in Mallorca: the Tower of Llucmajor, the port of Andratx, the view of the Malgrats Islands from Port Adriano or the beach of Can Pastilla, very close to Palma de Mallorca. There is even the possibility of contemplating incredible sunsets from the boats that make the journey between Mallorca and Cabrera to the very evening fall. A very different experience.
It is difficult to explain the irresistible attraction exercised by the contemplation of a sunset. What is sure is that everyone can find their favourite corner – and the best possible company – to enjoy the best sunsets of Mallorca. And since we are here, one last suggestion: How about a nice sunset to finish a day at the beach from one of the best “calas” on the island? Enjoy!
