The Cathedral
If there’s an iconic landmark in Mallorca, it’s the Cathedral. Built nearly 800 years ago, it’s the Balearic Islands’ most important artistic heritage. Both tourists and locals are captivated by its magnificence.
One of La Seu’s biggest charms are its terraces (open during spring and summer) where you can enjoy an incredible panoramic view of Palma and its surroundings. Access is free for residents of the Balearic Islands every other Saturday.
Almudaina Palace
The second most visited monument in the city –after the cathedral- is the Almudaina Palace: one of the few Arabic constructions still preserved after the Christian Reconquest. Access is free every Wednesday for local residents and EU Citizens. It’s the perfect opportunity to dive into the legacy left behind by all the previous civilizations which love passed through in the city.
Marivent
From one of the Royal House’s official headquarters to one of the most photographed locations by the press during the summer months. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, you can take a closer look at Marivent-Palace, as long as the Royal Family isn’t home, of course. The public area of the Palace consists of 9,000m2 of beautiful Mediterranean gardens. The visit can’t be complete without taking a look at the 12 bronze statues made by Joan Miró.
Castillo de Bellver
Located at just 3km from the center of Palma, the fortress of Bellver takes us back to Medieval times with its incredible views. Did you know it’s Spain’s only castle with a circular layout? Not only is it one of Palma’s essential visits; it also houses the city’s History Museum. Access is free on Sundays!
Es Baluard – Palma’s Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art
In 2008 Es Baluard came up with a unique entry fee: on Fridays, visitors choose how much they’re going to pay for their ticket. Starting at €0.10, the visitor can pay the amount he or she decides. This symbolic entry fee brings art closer to those who wish to take a look at the work of artists such as Barceló, Braque, Fontcuberta, García-Alix, Madoz, Mapplethorpe, Rusiñol, Sorolla, Tàpies… and many more. This is another free tour in Mallorca you can’t miss!
Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation
Located in an incredible architectural complex made up of 3 unique buildings, the Foundation contains almost 7,000 pieces, ranging from paintings, sculptures and drawings to objects and graphic work. If you’re a lover of the Barcelona genius you can’t miss the place where Miró lived and worked for 30 years. Access is free on Saturdays from 3pm to 6pm and on the first Sunday of the month from 10am to 3pm.
Museum-Foundation Juan March
Placed in a manor of Sant Miquel street, and with free pass from Monday to Friday from 10am to 6:30pm, and Saturday from 10:30am to 2pm, this museum shows a short but accurate path through the highlights of the Spanish art in the 20th Century, with paintings and sculptures from admired artists such us Miró, Dalí, Gris, Canogar, Chillida, Oteiza o Genovés. A selection of masterpieces that will not leave you unmoved.
Casal Solleric
Travelling to the XVIII Century, we land directly at Casal Solleric: an incredible rococo style palace making its way to neoclassicism. Since 1985 it houses monographic exhibitions for international artists, collective exhibitions of contemporary art and projects by local artists. Access is free from Tuesdays to Sundays.
Finally, we’d like to share a series of important dates which include free activities in Mallorca: Palma’s local festivities –January 20th-, Sant Joan festivities –June 23rd-, Day of the Balearic Islands –March 1st-, “Diada de Mallorca” –September 12th-, Mare de Déu de la Salut festivities –September 12th-, Christmas and Easter. These festivities include free cultural activities for everyone, as well as a series of free tours in Mallorca.
